What the work looks like here

Cambridge is not the same job as everywhere else.

Galt, Preston and Hespeler are still three towns

Cambridge was made out of three separate places in 1973 and the housing never merged. A stone house near the Galt core, a worker’s cottage in Preston and a post-war build in Hespeler are three different jobs, and quoting any of them from a photograph would be guesswork.

Century houses are not level, and that is normal

A house that has stood for a hundred and twenty years has settled, and the subfloor under the carpet is rarely flat. Levelling is the part of the job that decides whether the finished floor lasts, and on an old house it is often the larger half of the work. It belongs in the quote as its own line, not as a surprise on day two.

The original staircase is usually worth saving

Old Cambridge staircases were built from better wood than anything you can buy for the price today, and under the paint or the carpet there is often solid hardwood. Refinishing or recapping keeps the stair the house was designed around, and it is almost always cheaper than tearing it out.

My house is over a hundred years old and nothing is level. Is that a problem?

It is normal rather than a problem, but it does have to be dealt with before any floor goes down. Subfloor prep and levelling are quoted as part of the job, and on an older Cambridge house that work is often a real share of the total. You will see it itemised in the written quote rather than discovering it partway through.

Can an original staircase be saved, or does it have to come out?

Usually saved. Under old paint or carpet there is frequently solid hardwood in better condition than it looks, and it can be sanded back, restained to a colour you choose, or recapped with new treads over the existing structure. A full rebuild is for stairs that are structurally wrong, and Alexander will say so plainly if that is what yours are.
